Bar/Bat Mitzvah

Bar/Bat Mitzvah

Bar/Bat Mitzvah isn’t just the coming of age and maturation of a child into an adult. It is also a time when the soul begins to ‘blossom’, allowing the individual to find ‘moral maturity’ within him/herself. It’s seen as a point of time when we can begin to find a crystallization/awareness of our values which we know to be correct – and have that awareness guide our conduct.

In Jewish thought, ‘celebrations of the spirit’ also need to be ‘celebrations of the body’. So a Bar Mitzvah event needs to find tangible ways to express the spiritual milestone it celebrates.

We believe that the most important event in the life of a young person, should be more than just rote memorization leading up to an anxiety-ridden recital of the Torah.

Our emphasis in preparing B’nai Mitzvah, is to appreciate the spiritual meaning of this milestone and to provide each child with the knowledge and tools necessary to be an active Jewish adult no matter what life brings.

We strive to instill an awareness that this milestone is only the beginning of Jewish life and we help the children attain a greater appreciation of a Jewish adult’s responsibilities.

*Disclaimer: Enrollment in Shalom Hebrew School does not guarantee a Bar/Bat Mitzvah service. Child must be born to a Jewish mother who was either born Jewish, or has gone through a conversion that is approved by the Rabbinate of Israel.
